Crawford began developing games because he was unhappy with the state of the industry. In an effort to improve the industry, he published a special package of Eastern Front that included the source code (which he owned, not atari or APX) for $150. While a surprising number bought the package, nobody used any of the code in their stuff. Apparently people just wanted to see how the game worked.
